Overview

The property itself had an existing hydronic heating system and a pool heating system powered by an old oil boiler. Meanwhile, the indoor pool area was heated with a ducted propane gas heater. These traditional heating methods were less than efficient, prone to electricity breakdowns, and costly in energy bills.

The SóGeo team was tasked with designing and implementing a sustainable, efficient solution to replace these outdated heating systems. We equipped the home with the latest geothermal heating to ensure the homeowners had a sustainable source of energy for years to come.

Challenges

While upgrading David and Jenny’s home to geothermal heating, our team was required to navigate the following complexities.

  • Existing equipment removal: The home’s oil boiler was too large and heavy to fit through its room doors. This required significant coordination on the removal of the roof for extraction.
  • Avoiding underground pipework: The property had an extensive existing pipework underground, which needed to be carefully avoided during drilling and excavation.

Our Solution

To meet David and Jenny’s needs, we designed and installed a 70kW Stiebel Eltron Geothermal heat pump system. This geothermal heat pump works to continuously exchange heat from the ground to the surface, making it a highly efficient and sustainable energy source. [1]

The system featured a vertical geo-exchange system with 11 probes, each drilled to a depth of 100 meters. These vertical probes were connected to a geothermal manifold chamber located in the garden, which ensured seamless integration with the home’s existing heating infrastructure.

The SóGeo team collaborated closely with David and Jenny’s builder to locate most of the existing pipework. We carefully planned the excavation around these services to avoid any damage.

Additionally, we coordinated with a crane company to remove the old oil boiler through the home’s roof. The new geothermal heat pump and a large buffer tank was also lifted into the home from the roof. Our trusted connections with various partners allowed us to smoothly manage the installation process.

Results

The new geothermal heating system has significantly improved the heating and cooling process in David and Jenny’s home, and brought about the following positive benefits.

  • Elimination of fossil fuels: David and Jenny can now completely eliminate the need for oil and propane, significantly reducing their home’s carbon footprint.
  • More energy efficiency: The new heating system now operates at 740% efficiency, recording a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 7.4.
  • Cost savings: David and Jenny no longer face expensive electricity bills and frequent breakdowns in their heating systems, which saves them a significant amount in electricity and maintenance cost.

Key Takeaway

By replacing their outdated systems with a state-of-the-art geothermal heat pump, David and Jenny not only improved the efficiency and reliability of the heating system, but also contributed to a greener future.

“We’ve been using geothermal energy for a year now, and can see how exceptionally well the system works. It keeps our home and pool warm throughout the year, and we are glad we’ve made the switch to geothermal!”
