![Hydronic Radiators]()

# Hydronic Radiators Melbourne – Stylish & Efficient Heating | SóGeo

Hydronic radiators are especially popular in Melbourne’s existing homes and retrofits, as they can be added to older houses without major renovations

SóGeo specifies and installs hydronic panel radiators across Melbourne. Quiet, dust-free, energy-efficient heating that integrates cleanly with a hydronic heat pump or an existing gas boiler.

## How hydronic radiators work

A hydronic radiator is a sealed metal panel filled with water. A central appliance, either a [hydronic heat pump](https://sogeo.com.au/air-source-heat-pumps) or a gas boiler in older systems, heats the water and circulates it through small-diameter pipework into the radiator. The radiator’s surface releases the heat into the room through gentle radiant warmth, with no fans, no air movement, and no noise. The cooler water then returns to the heat source to be reheated, and the cycle repeats.

Because the heat is radiant rather than forced air, the room temperature stays even from floor to ceiling, dust and allergens stay where they are, and the entire system operates silently. The only moving part is the circulator pump in the plant room.

## SóGeo sizes radiators for heat pump flow temperatures

Older hydronic systems were designed for gas boilers running at 70 to 80°C. Modern hydronic heat pumps run at 45 to 55°C for efficient operation. SóGeo specifies hydronic radiators sized for that lower flow temperature, which means larger heated surface area per room than a legacy gas-boiler radiator. The result is the same room comfort at a fraction of the running cost.

On retrofit projects, we check the existing radiators against the heat-loss calculation. Where the existing radiators are correctly sized for heat pump flow temperatures, they stay. Where they need to be upsized, we specify the right replacements before quoting. This is the work that makes a [boiler to hydronic heat pump replacement](https://sogeo.com.au/replace-gas-boiler-hydronic-heat-pump) deliver the running cost saving on day one.

## Benefits of hydronic radiators

- **Energy-efficient operation.** Hydronic radiators run at lower water temperatures than legacy systems, reducing energy consumption when paired with a modern heat pump.
- **No dust or allergen circulation.** Hydronic systems do not use forced air, which means dust, pet dander and pollen stay out of the heating loop.
- **Designer finish flexibility.** Hydronic radiators come in standard white panels, designer colours, and towel-rail formats for bathrooms. A SóGeo install matches the radiator finish to the room.
- **Silent operation.** No fans, no compressors inside the home, no ductwork noise. Ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and offices.
- **Compatibility with renewables.** Hydronic radiators integrate with rooftop solar PV via the heat pump, with no separate retrofit required.

## When hydronic radiators are the right choice

Hydronic radiators are the right answer in three Melbourne home scenarios.

The first is replacing a failing gas boiler in an existing hydronic home. The radiators are typically already in place. SóGeo swaps the boiler for a hydronic heat pump, retains the radiators where they are correctly sized, and upsizes any that the heat-loss calculation flags. The pipework, valves and zoning generally stay. This is the most common SóGeo retrofit and the fastest path to lower running cost.

The second is a new build or extensive renovation where the homeowner wants radiant comfort without the slab work that hydronic underfloor heating requires. Radiators install in days, not weeks, and the radiator selection becomes part of the room design rather than a hidden infrastructure layer.

The third is mixed-use spaces where rapid temperature response is more important than slab thermal mass. Bedrooms used intermittently, home offices, studios, and rental property bedrooms benefit from radiators that warm up quickly and turn down quickly. For underfloor comfort in main living areas, SóGeo specifies a hybrid system. See our [hydronic underfloor heating page](https://sogeo.com.au/hydronic-heating-cooling/hydronic-underfloor-heating-comfort-efficiency) for that side of the conversation.

## Hydronic radiators in a SóGeo install

SóGeo is a Melbourne hydronic specialist. Director Darren Burch has been installing hydronic systems for over twenty years, drawing on three generations of hydronic experience from Ireland. Every radiator install starts with a site visit and a heat-loss calculation on the specific home, room by room. From there we walk through the panel sizing, the finish options, and the radiator placement against the existing furniture and architecture. The output is a fixed quote against the design, with no estimates and no surprises.
